Jewelry Care and more

A simple guide for ruru. jewelry and how to take care of them

We here at ruru. studios believe jewelry should be worn, loved and last for years. That’s why all our pieces are made from real Silver (925 Sterling Silver), with or without a layer of real gold (18k Gold) or rhodium.

This guide explains how to care for your jewelry, what our materials mean, and why ruru. pieces are different from typical “waterproof” fashion jewelry.

What our jewelry is made of

925 Sterling Silver
18k Gold Plated
Rhodium Plated
18k Gold Vermeil

All ruru. pieces are made from 925 Sterling Silver at their core. This means the jewelry consists of real silver, combined with a small amount of other metals to make it durable enough for everyday wear. Depending on the design, the silver is either left silver-colored, gold plated, made as 18k gold vermeil, or finished with a rhodium coating.

Sterling silver is a precious metal. It has a higher material value than fashion jewelry and can be polished, refreshed and worn for many years.

Why we choose 925 Sterling Silver

You may have seen a lot of “waterproof jewelry” on social media. These pieces are often made from materials like stainless steel or brass, which can be great options for certain types of fashion jewelry.

We at ruru. studios choose 925 Sterling Silver because it is a real precious metal with a unique balance of beauty, value and longevity. Sterling silver has a higher material value, a distinctive feel on the skin and can be polished, refreshed and worn for many years.

Unlike many fashion jewelry materials, sterling silver ages gracefully. With the right care, it doesn’t just last, it develops character over time.

That’s why sterling silver is our core material. It reflects what ruru. studios stands for: jewelry pieces that feel special, are made to be worn often, and stay with you for a long time.

Please keep the following in mind, to have your ruru. jewelry stay beautiful for a long time:

Put on ruru. jewelry jewelry after applying perfume, lotion or hairspray.

Avoid wearing ruru. jewelry in the shower, as water and soap can dull the shine. Swimming is also not recommended, since chlorine and saltwater can damage the surface.

When you’re not wearing your jewelry, store it in a dry, dark place, ideally in your ruru. pouch, which is included for free with every order.

From time to time, gently polish your pieces with a soft dry cloth, or with your pouch, to refresh their shine.

Gold Plated vs. Gold Vermeil vs. Rhodium Plated

All ruru. jewelry pieces are made from 925 Sterling Silver and finished with either 18k gold or rhodium, depending on the design.

Our Gold Plated Jewelry has a thin layer of 18k gold on top of sterling silver. Over time, this layer will naturally wear off and reveal the silver underneath, especially on pieces that experience a lot of friction.

We use high-quality, multi-layer gold plating, but gold plating is never permanent and its durability depends largely on how the jewelry is worn. Earrings usually keep their gold finish longer, while rings tend to fade faster.

If you’re looking for a daily wear jewelry piece in gold, 18k gold vermeil is the better choice.

Our 18k Gold Vermeil Jewelry also start with 925 Sterling Silver, but are finished with a significantly thicker layer of real gold. This makes gold vermeil more durable and better suited for pieces that are worn often.

From the experience we made so far, rings are especially affected by everyday wear and tear. That’s why we are gradually transitioning our Gold Plated rings to 18k Gold Vermeil, to offer a gold finish that lasts longer in daily life.

Gold Vermeil is the right choice if you love gold and want a finish that stays beautiful for longer.

For a bright, cool silver look, we use Rhodium Plating. Rhodium is a precious metal from the platinum family and helps protect the silver surface. It reduces oxidation and scratches, and keeps silver jewelry shiny for much longer.

Each finish is chosen carefully to match the look, feel and longevity we want for every ruru. jewelry piece.

About Oxidation (black spots)

Why silver jewelry can turn darker – and how to make it shiny again

Sterling silver can naturally react with air, moisture or your skin. Over time, this may cause the surface to look slightly darker (black color) or less shiny. This is called oxidation and it’s completely normal for real silver. Real materials react, age and change a little over time.

Oxidation is not damage and does not mean your jewelry is old or low quality. It just shows that it is made from genuine 925 Sterling Silver.

The good news: oxidation can be removed very easily. Just quickly polish your ruru. jewelry with a soft cloth or your ruru. pouch. It will usually bring your jewelry back to its original shine.

ruru. jewelry is made from real 925 Sterling Silver. It is more valuable than brass or stainless steel fashion jewelry, requires a little care, and will stay beautiful for many years when treated well.
